I am continuing to research the wedding traditions that affect what I teach for dancing at the wedding. Today it is the practice of giving the bride away. Once again it is rooted in the tradition of the father selling
the bride to the groom, for a price or dowry. Later giving the bride away was transference of authority from the father to the groom over the bride.
In modern times the attitudeand culture around giving the bride away has changed. Many fathers view their daughters as precious treasures that they are entrusting to the prince charming (orsuperman) that their daughter has fallen in love with. It breaks many a father’s heart to give their little princess away. They will do anything for her; even learn to dance a father daughter dance, even when they refused to learn to
dance for their own wedding. As the man who walks on water to his little girl, he will swallow his pride, and take dance lessons to impress his little princess one last time.
I love putting together father daughter dances with meaning for these fathers. It is too beautiful even for words. I found a video of the Disney fathers dancing to, “I loved her first”- one of my favorite father daughter songs. Dance with happy feet.
