New Orleans Gumbo Dancesport Trip
Competition ballroom dance offers an opportunity to travel. To qualify for USA dance nationals, we traveled with Robyn and William to New Orleans for the Gumbo Dancesport championships. Dancing novice and pre-championship American smooth, international Latin and Standard ballroom dances, Robyn and William were up to the challenge
Travel to New Orleans
Pre-dawn on Thursday June 27th our fearsome foursome headed to Denver international airport to take off for New Orleans. While on the moving walkway Robyn and Bill practiced their dancesport moves. Following an uneventful flight, bags were tucked safely into the rental and we headed into New Orleans.
New Orleans Bus tour
With time to sight see, we hoped onto a hop on hop off bus tour. The bus guide was fun and entertaining, telling us about New Orleans history as the double decker buss trundled down the street. At noon we hopped off for a classic white tablecloth and linens lunch at the palace café. After lunch we hopped back on the bus to the garden district with the only public graveyard. Back on the bus for a walking tour of the French quarter. After dinner we headed to our hotel for a good night rest for our first day of competition.
New Orleans Gumbo Dancesport
Friday June 28th was the first day of the Gumbo Dancesport Championship. Robyn and William warmed up their new American smooth ballroom routines. They took to the floor with a flourish for novice and pre-championship smooth dances, waltz, tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz. They placed 2nd in novice and 4th in pre-championship smooth. It was a great day of dancing and to celebrate we went downtown to explore bourbon street.
Standard & Latin Gumbo Dancesport
Saturday June 29th was a big day of competition. They began their session with the novice and pre-championship Latin dances. They looked polished in their Samba, Cha-cha, Rumba, and Jive and placed 1st in Novice and Pre-Championship.
Finally, Robyn and William danced the novice international standard ballroom. Dancing Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep this Colorado couple took 2nd overall.
Travel back to Denver
Sunday was a good day to pack our bags and see some final sights before heading home to Denver, we headed back into the New Orleans French Quarter for coffee and beignets. From there we took the ferry across the big muddy Mississippi for fabulous views of the French quarter. Then we road the trolley’s around town before heading to the airport to return home. It was a great trip to New Orleans for the Gumbo Dancesport.
