Pumpkin Follies 2015
Fall in Littleton brings corn mazes, zombie crawls, pumpkin spice, and the annual Pumpkin Follies. This is a friendly competition between the merchants in and around downtown Littleton. A team of merchants decorates a pole in pumpkins with a theme around Old Littleton. This year, Adventures in Dance teamed up with Ned Kelly’s to take the more… despicable route.
Towering over his minions, Gru from the movie “Despicable Me” stands tall in his black attire and signature stripped scarf. The team included his minions, both purple and yellow, dancing around the base of the pole in celebration of Littleton.
This year saw tough competition among the pumpkins. The passer-byers of Littleton saw the characters from the “Nightmare before Christmas,” minions, emoji pumpkins, harvest pumpkins, a large grim reaper, Day of the Dead, Harry Potter and many more. The Pumpkin Follies are decorated pumpkin poles yes, but after all it is a competition.
Greg Reinke of the Reinke Bro’s Halloween and costume shop puts on the event and has the privilege of escorting the district court judges down the street to place the poles. These are no ordinary judges. No. These judges are dressed appropriately for the job complete with long, black judge robes and white, curly wigs. These individuals will decide which pumpkin pole wins the Pumpkin Follie.
The teams of merchants came out to witness the process and help the judges out a little with cookies, complements, seats or maybe some free dance lessons (cough cough). With this so ever generous help the judges can make their final decision. The Pumpkin Follies bring the merchants together to spread the festive spirit and encourage community throughout Littleton.
Congratulations to Grandpa’s Attic, Littleton Elks #1650 and Western Welcome Week who won first place for a Nightmare Before Christmas. Second place went to Star Wars created Colorado Home Realty, The Chocolate Therapist and Velvet Wolf. Third place was a tie going to The Minions, created by La Vaca Meat Company, Kate’s Wine Bar and Olde Towne Tavern; and The Harvest created by Think Tank South and Colorado Frame Company & Savvy Stuff.
